Koln (Cologne)

We've been off the air for a few days due to limited internet access but looks like we are back up (keep your fingers crossed).
On the way to Langenfeld we had a great afternoon in Cologne. The catherdral (Dom) took over 600 years to build and was at one time the largest in the world (although, by the time it was finished the church in Rome was much larger however it remains the tallest. (A few enthusiastic members of our group climbed to the top of the tower- well done).
Cologne is also the home of eau de cologne; we visited the orginal parfumery and also saw the 4711 stores around town (I remember this being the first "real" perfume we were given by our grandmas when we were growing up). Must say the original has a much more pleasant floral base than 4711.
More of a highlight for some was the chocolate factory & museum- yummmm.
Our guide also showed us photos of the impact of some of the floods on the town. They have a temporary wall that can be erected to hold back flood waters that slots into a wall surrounding the city - amazing.
Here's a pic of one of the other steeples in the altstadt.
